November 13, 2018 – OPERA GARNIER – MONTE-CARLO JAZZ FESTIVAL 2018 OPENING – GREGORY PORTER – ROBIN MCKELLE – Gregory Porter’s love for the music of Nat King Cole dates back to his childhood. Well before conquering a worldwide success thanks to his beautiful baritone voice, poignant compositions and incredible theatrical performances, Gregory Porter had staged his special relationship with Nat King Cole writing “Nat King Cole & me”, a musical comedy widely autobiographical, first performed in 2004. It is this show that he repeats today on stage, recorded with the help of the famous arranger Vince Mendoza, the pianist Christian Sands, the bassist Reuben Rogers and the drummer Ulysses Owens.
First part, Robin Mckelle – The Melodic Canvas project was born shortly after a tour of Europe in a jazz context. After several soul and blues records, he chose to return to a minimalist acoustic aesthetic, mostly to accompany piano, guitar, percussion, and no drums. His return to jazz takes place without neglecting the groove that characterizes it: the themes highlight new facets of the singer, including sensitivity to melody and musicality that allow it to interact with its partners, as an instrumentalist.

November 14  2018 – MONTE-CARLO JAZZ FESTIVAL 2018 – OPERA GARNIER MONTE CARLO – BOBBY MCFERRIN – YOUN SUN NAH – Winner of ten Grammys, Bobby McFerrin has crossed the boundaries between art, pop and jazz, not hesitating to perform barefoot in the most prestigious venues, conquering the public with its wild gesture, exploring new territories and inspiring an entire generation of cappella singers and  beatbox. He collaborates with the greatest musicians, such as the pianist Chick Corea, or the classical cellist Yo-Yo Ma. On the stage, his principle is to reproduce an entire orchestration, just with his bass voice, and imitating the tone of almost all musical instruments, and thus involving the audience in his performances. His latest album, Spirityouall, is a blues recording that represents another unexpected step for this rebel of the music industry. First part: Youn Sun Nah – Discovered at the Juan les Pins Jazz Festival at the turn of the 2000s, the Korean singer has followed a brilliant career, which led her to perform in the most prestigious concert halls and major festivals. After returning to her country after twenty years ispent n France, she performed at the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics and accepted the artistic direction of traditional Korean music at the Yeowoorak Festival at the National Theater of Korea. For hes concert at the Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival, Youn Sun Nah will be joined by Frank Woeste (piano), Fender Rhodes (Hammond organ), Brad Jones (bass), Tomek Miernowski (guitar) and Dan Rieser (drums) for an exhibition centered on the songs of his new album.

November 18th 2018 – MONTE -CARLO JAZZ FESTIVAL 2018 – OPERA GARNIER MONTE CARLO – DENIS MATSUEV: “CLASSICS AND JAZZ” – A worthy heir to Emil Gilels and the great Russian school, Denis Matsuev is a star, a genius of the classical piano: first prize at the International Competition Tchaikovsky at age 23, the colossus of Irkutsk has conquered the world with its athletic performances of Rachmaninov and Shostakovich. With his imposing presence and with a naturalness that enchants, it holds 150 concerts a year in the most prestigious concert halls and under the direction of the greatest directors. Denis Matsuev will be accompanied by Alexander Zinger (drums), Andrey Ivanov (bass) Aidar Gaynullin (accordion) and Siofia Turina (saxophone). When he does not play the piano, he directs seven festivals (including that of Annecy, in France) and a foundation that discovers and supports young musicians. No granting bis, Matsuev sometimes surprises his audience of music lovers with jazz improvisations, which drove the Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival to invite him to this concert, whose pieces are kept secret.

November 19th 2018 – MONACO NATIONAL DAY  – The “day of the sovereign” was traditionally fixed on the day of the patron saint of the ruling prince. By the Sovereign Order No. 465 of October 27, 1951, Rainier III changed this tradition, choosing the day of his inaugurationto the throne, November 19, which is also the day of the celebration of the Blessed Ranieri of Arezzo. In memory of his father, Prince Albert II keeps the same date, thus setting the Monaco National Day . The current ceremonial dates back to the reign of Prince Charles III, with a Te Deum regularly celebrated in the San Nicola Cathedral and with the Monegasque anthem. The Compagnie des Gardes du Prince escort the procession from the Government Palace to the Church where it forms a wing. After the Te Deum, the ceremonial parade takes place on the Palace Square. Naturally the day is animated by various celebrations, fantastic fireworks, concerts and popular games on the Rock. A police detachment and a fire brigade are involved in the parade alongside the Carabiniers.

19, 22 and 23 NOVEMBER, 2018 at 8.00 pm – OPERA DE MONTE-CARLO – SAMSON AND DALILA – Beyond the iconic role of Samson, who is well-known in every sense of the word, it is in Dalila that the most important music of this Opera shines. If the dramatic ending enchants the viewer and reassures the moral, it is the caressing phrases of the heroine that disturb us. Camille Saint-Saëns, a great admirer of the Principality, was very reserved, but this work fully reveals the complexity of his soul … for our enjoyment. Info of shows: Monday 19 November, 2018 at 8 pm (at the invitation of the Prince’s Palace) – Thursday 22 November 2018 at 20 – Sunday 23 November 2018 at 3 pm.

November 23 2018 – MONTE-CARLO JAZZ FESTIVAL 2018 – OPERA GARNIER MONTE CARLO – HUGH COLTMAN AND SANSEVERINO – First part: Hugh Coltman – “Who’s happy?”: British but resident in France, the former rock-blues frontman of The Hoax became popular singer-songwriter – Pop before becoming a jazz enthusiast, Hugh Coltman is rarely where he is expected. With “Who’s happy?”, his new album, the eighty-year-old adventurer takes a new step in his journey as an artist who has decided to go beyond borders, formats and models. In 2012 he discovered “the jazz musicians, who are more rock than a lot of rock and roll musicians, who do not play a song on Thursday as they played it on Tuesday, and that  are all so smart to afford to make substitutions”. It becomes a long-term adventure that leads to an album / tribute to Nat King Cole: 120 concerts, a jazz victory 2017 that consecrates him “the voice of the year” … Refusing to capitalize on this unexpected success with an other cover, it is in New Orleans that Hugh went in search of inspiration for his new project.

Sthépane Sanseverino
Inspired by gypsy music, gypsy jazz and electric music of the’ 40s and ’50s and Zappa Django, for 20 years Stéphane Sanseverino proposal music is both extravagant and virtuous: with “Montreuil / Memphis”, his latest album, Sanseverino treats the electric blues he played his youth when he learned the guitar, winking at Eddy Mitchell and his “Nashville ou Belleville”, where the title of the song shows his inspiration  His passions (the bicycle!), his rants, his thoughts on society (Belleville) this time will be passed through a sieve, to get to a rock-blues guitar and harmonica.

November 24 – MONTE-CARLO JAZZ FESTIVAL 2018 – OPERA GARNIER MONTE CARLO – THE AMAZING KEYSTONE BIG BAND – “DJANGO EXTENDED” – Come and discover the very special guests of this evening which are: Vincent Peirani, Bireli Lagrene, Mathias Levy, Marian Badoi and Roky Gresset. Created in 2010, The Amazing Keystone Big Band expresses both the spirit of the great swing-era formations, and the inventiveness, openness, insolent virtuosity of today’s jazz. Friends from the Conservatory, pianist Fred Nardin, saxophonist Jon Boutellier, trombonist, and trumpet player Bastien Ballaz David Enhco provide monstrous orchestral abilities and arrangements, all in all seventeen musicians pounding behind their instruments. This turbulent jazz machine is not just about their loyalty to Count Basie, Duke Ellington or Thad Jones, but above all this orchestra of selected friends allows them to experiment with new ideas, revisiting the pearls of immortal pieces. The Amazing Keystone Big Band rides the wave, giving free rein to the creativity of its musicians. After the successful adaptation of works by Prokofiev and Camille Saint-Saens, the 17 musicians of The Amazing Keystone Big Band continue their adventure with a project focused on the legendary personality of Django Reinhardt. In Django EXTENDED they interpret in their own way the greatest hits of the famous Gypsy guitarist.

November 25th 2018 – GRIMALDI FORUM – INDIGO SPACE – “VIVRE ENSEMBLE” – PHOTO EXHIBITION BY JEAN-CHARLES VINAJ – “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way it treats its animals” (Sri Aurobindo). A harmonious coexistence between man and animal is possible. Our planet offers a natural heritage of great wealth and incredible beauty. Today our biodiversity is fragile. Ensuring the respect and survival of an animal species also means adopting a responsible attitude from the environmental point of view and learning to apply it. So, if today’s world wants to be responsible for the environment, it must learn to coexist on Earth, guaranteeing the rights of animals, and recognizing their vulnerability. The survival of a species also depends on the protection of natural environments.

November 28th 2018 – MONTE-CARLO JAZZ FESTIVAL 2018 – OPERA GARNIER MONTE-CARLO – JOHN MCLAUGHLIN AND THE 4TH SPECIAL DIMENSION GUEST STAR SHANKAR MAHADEVAN“JAZZ-ROCK-RAGAS AND BEYOND” – Based in Monaco for years, John McLaughlin put togethere his legendary band, 4th Dimension (Etienne M’Bappe bass, Gary Husband keyboards, Ranjit Barot drums), to present at the Monte Carlo Jazz Festival his new project. A music that mixes Western and Indian influences and techniques again, but in a totally different way than he had experimented with Shakti.

John Mc Laughlin
For this, the British guitarist has worked with the singer and Indian composer Shankar Mahadevan, who will be on stage with the group for this evening in every exceptional point. At 76, John McLaughlin is considered one of the greatest live guitarists. His career really began with the recording of Miles Davis’ masterpiece, In A Silent Way, with which he initiated the fusion of jazz and rock.

November 29, 2018 – MONTE-CARLO JAZZ FESTIVAL 2018 – OPERA GARNIER MONTE-CARLO – MANU KATCHE – “THE SCOPE” – ELECTRO DELUXE & JAMES COPLEY – CIRCLE – Classical training, National Conservatory of Music of Paris … Promised to the noble percussionist career in a symphonic orchestra, Manu Katché deviated from a drawn road to connect with jazz, pop and rock. Studio musician and accompanist of the top French singers (Goldman, Souchon, Chedid, Catherine Lara, Michel Jonasz …), he owes the explosion of his international career to Peter Gabriel who asks him to hold the drums for the album “So”. The very particular sound of his drums is spotted by the stars of pop-rock and opens the doors of studios and major international stages. Multi-rewarded as an exceptional musician and talented composer, Manu Katché has never given up to his first love: jazz. Part 1: Despite a name that seems to pretend otherwise, ELECTRO DELUXE is no longer an electro band. Since James Copley settled at the microphone of a formation that has skimmed the scenes of France and Navarre, samplers, machines and turntables have been put in the closet and it is with an absolute search for authenticity and naturalness that their last opus, CIRCLE was thought and realized. Vintage instruments, vintage equipment and recording in the historic Sidney Bechet studios will have been the gateway to achieve this.

Without nostalgia, but in the great tradition of an elegant and intimate music hall, they perform some of their favorite songs, selected with passion in the hexagonal repertoire, as well as titles composed by Benjamin for himself or for them. other. Not to mention a few surprises … Part One: Cyrille Aimée – From the Gypsy camps in her hometown, to Broadway, through the Star Ac and the Apollo Theater in New York, until now recognized by the Wall Street Journal as “one of the most promising singers of her generation” and by the New York Times as “a rising star in the galaxy of jazz singers”, her career is dreamy. In 2014, based in New York, Aimee released “It’s a Good Day”, her first album. “Let’s Get Lost” in 2016 is rising her to the top of the US jazz rankings and allows Cyrille and hes quintet to perform many musical tours in the last three years, in America, Europe and Asia.
