THE NEW ITALIAN AMBASSADOR IN MONACO

By Virginia De Masi

MONACO. On September 16, 2020, the new Italian Ambassador to Monaco, H.E. Giulio Alaimo, presented his credentials to H.S.H. Prince Albert II. The ceremony regulated by the State bylaws has taken place at the Palace and it was followed by a private meeting between the Sovereign and the Ambassador, during which the excellent collaborative relations existing between the two countries and the prospects for further consolidation were highlighted.

H.E. Giulio Alaimo was born in Rome on September 1,1961. Graduated in Political Science from Sapienza University in Rome, he entered a diplomatic career in 1991. In 2013 H.E. Giulio Alaimo was appointed Official Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. He was awarded for acquired merit towards the Nation in the engagement of public offices as well as for long and distinguished services during his career. He began his professional career at the General Directorate for Economic Affairs, from which he then went on endorsement to the presidency of the Council of Ministers. He held his first assignment abroad at the Italian Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan (1994-1998), and was Consul General in La Plata, Argentina (1998-2002). Upon returning to Rome, he served at the General Directorate for Personnel and later at the General Directorate for the Italians Abroad and for the Migration Policies. He was then appointed Head of the Migration and Social Affairs Office in the Embassies of Ottawa (2005-2009) and Paris (2009-2013). Back to the Ministry, he served in the General Directorate for the Promotion of the Country System. He was later entrusted with the role of General Deputy Commissioner of the Italian Government for Expo Milano 2015. After the event, in 2016 he was appointed First Class General Consul in Zurich. On June 22, 2020 in Zurich he retraced the main stages of his mission in Zurich in the press conference with the community media, summoned to send a greeting through them to the Italian community at the end of his mandate,  “These have been 4 very demanding years, with many events that have made me know and appreciate a large Italian community, which honors our country and has earned the high esteem of the Swiss authorities”. he said with a touch of emotion. The unusual formula to greet fellow countrymen was used as the pandemic caused by Covid-19 had imposed a ban on meetings, primarily the Italian Republic Day of June 2 last. In March, the Coronavirus pandemic hit the administrative apparatus like a cyclone, drastically plunging production. To avoid the risk of total blockade in the event of an outbreak of contagion, the consular staff were divided into two groups that alternated with the remote work formula and on-site service. In Monaco, H.E. Giulio Alaimo will manage the outcomes of the Italian Referendum on the cut of parliamentarians that will take place on 20 and 21 September as Italians in the world will vote by correspondence. “It will be a bumpy path, both for the shortage of time and for the objective difficulties that the entire Diplomatic-Consular network is experiencing” underlined Giulio Alaimo. From a strictly administrative point of view, Alaimo must be acknowledged for his constant commitment to making the services provided ever more efficient and rapid, and for having personally supported all the initiatives implemented by the various actors that enhance the Italian System, as well as to have always promoted prestigious initiatives in support of the Italian language and culture, often alongside authorities and bodies. On behalf of the Montecarlotimes Publishing, we wish the new ambassador Giulio Alaimo our best wishes for a good start in the new diplomatic seat and best wishes for his professional future.
