Did you know Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier’s first meeting was full of twists and chance encounters?
Welcome to the first article in my column “Be Graceful”, dedicated entirely to Princess Grace’s life and legacy — my personal love letter to you.
It was May 1955, and Grace Kelly was at the height of her Hollywood career. She had worked with some of the most respected directors, including Alfred Hitchcock, and had just won an Academy Award. Worn out after years of hard work, she longed for a break. Yet her publicist, Rupert Allan, insisted she attend the Cannes Film Festival to promote The Country Girl. Grace reluctantly agreed.
When the editor of Paris Match learned Grace would be in Cannes, he envisioned a charming “Hollywood Queen meets the Prince of Monaco” moment. But with both Grace and Rainier’s schedules full, it seemed unlikely — until fate intervened. On the train to
Cannes, Olivia de Havilland, wife of Paris Match editor Pierre Galante, happened to meet Grace. Their conversation led to plans for Grace to visit the Prince at the Palais Princier on May 6, accompanied by photographer Edward Quinn, who had already photographed both of them and would become an important witness to their story.
The meeting didn’t begin as expected. Rainier arrived an hour late. While waiting, Grace toured the palace on her own, initially irritated: “I think it’s very rude of him to keep us waiting like this,” she told her team. But according to Quinn, her irritation soon turned into curiosity. She asked, “How does one address a prince? Can he speak English? How old is he?” She even glanced around for a mirror to check her makeup.
When Rainier finally appeared, Grace — who had rehearsed her royal curtsy several times — barely bent her knee. The Prince greeted her with a reassuring smile and a simple, “Hello, pleased to meet you,” instantly putting her at ease, Quinn later recalled. Both seemed shy, so Quinn suggested a stroll through the palace gardens.
That short yet enchanting 30-minute walk seemed to spark something between them. Grace reportedly told Pierre and Olivia afterward, “Well, he’s very charming.” Not long after, Grace and Rainier began exchanging letters in secret — a romantic correspondence that continued until their engagement. Rainier kept those letters for the rest of his life, until his death in 2005.
Their wedding in April 1956 captured the world’s imagination, a fairy tale played out before millions. Even today, Grace and Rainier’s story reminds us that love can appear when we least expect it — and that a single, fleeting moment can change the course of our lives forever. Sometimes, real life truly can feel like the movies.

Dopo, Grace avrebbe detto a Pierre e Olivia: “Beh, è molto affascinante.” Poco tempo dopo, Grace e Ranieri iniziarono a scambiarsi lettere segrete — una corrispondenza romantica che continuò fino al loro fidanzamento. Ranieri conservò quelle lettere per tutta la vita, fino alla sua morte nel 2005.
Il loro matrimonio nell’aprile 1956 catturò l’immaginazione del mondo, una fiaba vissuta davanti a milioni di persone.
