Exposition Jean-Luc Desset – Pop Urbain à Grasse

EN

Until 31 August 2026, Grasse – the historic capital of perfume – is transforming into a veritable open-air museum of contemporary art.

The Provençal town is hosting the major itinerant exhibition ‘Jean-Luc Desset – Pop Urbain’, a key cultural event of the summer on the Côte d’Azur, aimed at celebrating the memory and creative genius of one of its most brilliant sons, who passed away in 2021 at the age of just 47.

This ambitious project stems from a deep desire to share and promote culture, and from the aim of Fréderick Vuillet, the artist’s heir, to bring art to life for the public by integrating it into the city.

The vision was immediately supported by Mayor Jérôme Viaud – who has always been keen to promote urban art in his municipality – and by the prestigious Fonds Baudelaire.

One of the most spectacular temporary transformations is that of the historic premises of the former Société Marsellaise de Crédit: a disused bank which, for the summer, has been converted into the ‘JL Pop Store’, a 260-square-metre exhibition and immersive space extending all the way to the vault room.

Who was Jean-Luc Desset

Born in Grasse, Jean-Luc Desset took his first steps in the art world in 1999, exhibiting his works for the first time at the Espace Martello in his hometown.

After initially training in interior design, he chose to break away from the discipline’s rigid rules to devote himself entirely to painting, controlling every stage of the creative process entirely independently.

Desset was strongly influenced by Pop Art, pop culture, the Disney universe and the Japanese ‘Kawaii’ aesthetic, giving rise to a unique and recognisable visual language.

His work consists of vibrant compositions, populated by surreal characters drawn from childhood memories, and the constant presence of an iconic self-portrait face that serves as his visual signature.

However, the lightness of colour and playfulness of his canvases conceal a refined social critique, offering a lucid and ironic view of the contradictions of the modern world. Honoured by the Mediterranean Union for Modern Art (UMAM), throughout his career he has exhibited his works in major galleries in Monaco, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Paris, Italy, Belgium, Germany and Lebanon.

The Exhibition Route: Between Squares and Galleries

The exhibition is spread across two levels: outdoors, along the Cours Honoré-Cresp and in the picturesque Place du Clavecin, where visitors can admire 26 monumental works in XXL format; and indoors, at the JL Pop Store, where they can view up close the original canvases and drawings from some of the artist’s most famous series.

There will also be special guests such as the sculptor Laurent Bosio and the renowned cartoonist Kristian, as well as sessions featuring artist-designed tattoos, live painting performances, concerts and art-themed dinners.

Event Programme

From 30 July to 2 August, visitors will have the opportunity to discover and view the creations of ceramic artist Ceramic Tattoo.

From 7 August, visitors can enjoy free live music performances; from 13 August, you can book a place for one of the special paid dinners in unusual venues in the city centre – Dîner éphémère Art & Gastronomie – and from 28 August, you can attend the exhibition’s closing event in the presence of the mayor and president of the Communauté d’agglomération du Pays de Grasse, Jérôme Viaud.
