A striking symbol of the Principality returns to the skies as the Aéronautes de Monaco look towards an increasingly international future

For the second consecutive year, an unmistakable symbol of Monaco once again took centre stage in one of the Principality’s most iconic settings. During the Monaco Yacht Show 2026, the national Monaco Moravia hot-air balloonwas presented on the Place du Palais Princier, creating a spectacular image against the historic backdrop of the Palais Princier.

The operation, organised by the Club des Aéronautes de Monaco, was made possible only after particularly careful assessment of the weather conditions. In an environment as exceptional as the Place du Palais, the deployment of a hot-air balloon requires rigorous control of wind direction, speed and changing atmospheric conditions.

The decision to proceed was confirmed only minutes before the operation, once the conditions were considered sufficiently favourable. Secured to the ground, the balloon was then fully inflated, revealing its distinctive red-and-white colours and offering visitors and spectators an extraordinary view in the heart of the Principality.

An emblem of Monaco in the skies

For the Aéronautes de Monaco, the return of the Monaco Moravia balloon represents much more than a spectacular display. It is part of a broader ambition to promote the colours and identity of Monaco through ballooning, both within the Principality and on the international stage.

Leading the operation was Alain Cruteanschii, President of the Club des Aéronautes de Monaco and pilot of the national balloon. For the club, moments such as this reflect years of work and a growing ambition to establish the Monaco balloon as an international ambassador for the Principality.

“An extraordinary evening in an exceptional setting,” Cruteanschii said. “The trust placed in us by the Sovereign, by allowing us to fly on his land, is an immense honour for the Club des Aéronautes de Monaco and for all our partners.”

He described the occasion as a moment of “pride, and a duty accomplished”, underlining the significance of bringing the balloon once again to one of Monaco’s most recognisable landmarks.

The initiative also benefits from the support of Moravia Yachting, principal partner of the Aéronautes de Monaco since last year. The collaboration has become an important element in the club’s development, supporting a project whose ambitions increasingly extend beyond Monaco’s borders.

From the Principality to the world

The Monaco Moravia balloon is now being developed as a travelling ambassador for Monaco, with a programme of international appearances already taking shape.

Among the destinations planned for the beginning of 2027 are the Mondovì Festival in Italy, Méribel in the French Alps and the International Château-d’Œx Balloon Festival in Switzerland. February will see further appearances in Verbier, Switzerland, and Auron, in the Alpes-Maritimes, alongside additional destinations yet to be announced.

The most ambitious project, however, is still ahead.

The Aéronautes de Monaco are preparing a proposed east-to-west crossing of the United States in 2027–2028, departing from Philadelphia, the birthplace of Princess Grace. The expedition is expected to unfold over seven stages and almost two months, culminating in the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, where the Monaco team aims to take part in the Nations Cup.

For Cruteanschii, the project represents an opportunity that goes beyond the sporting and human challenge.

“Beyond the aerial and human achievement, this crossing will provide a remarkable international showcase for what, in our eyes, is one of the Principality’s most beautiful emblems,” he explains.

The project also carries a strong symbolic dimension. With the Sovereign serving as Honorary President of the Aéronautes de Monaco, the red-and-white balloon embodies a contemporary interpretation of Monaco’s identity: environmentally conscious, elegant and adventurous, while remaining closely connected to the Principality’s heritage.

A new chapter for a distinctive Monaco symbol

Its appearance during the Monaco Yacht Show 2026 once again demonstrated the power of the balloon as a visual ambassador. Against the architecture of the Palais Princier, the red-and-white colours created an image that was immediately recognisable as Monaco, while also reflecting the Principality’s long-standing ability to combine tradition with innovation.

From the Place du Palais to the mountains of the Alps and, potentially, across the United States, the Monaco Moravia balloon is preparing to carry that image further afield.

Its journey has only just begun.
