Monaco is preparing to welcome a new chapter in its numismatic history. To mark the 20th anniversary of the reign of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II, the Principality is unveiling a new effigy of the Sovereign on its 1 and 2 euro circulation coins. The refreshed design, dated 2025, will enter circulation at the end of October, as announced by the Treasury and Public Finance Department of Monaco.
The new portrait depicts Prince Albert II facing forward — a departure from the traditional profile that has appeared on Monegasque euro coins since their introduction in 2005. The frontal composition gives the image a more stately and modern presence, highlighting both the authority and serenity of the Prince. Accompanying the portrait are the Prince’s crowned monogram and the silver-and-red lozengy motif of the Grimaldi coat of arms, symbolizing the enduring identity of the Principality.
This design shift is not merely aesthetic. It reflects two decades of continuity and transformation under the reign of Prince Albert II, a period marked by Monaco’s increasing commitment to sustainability, diplomacy, and cultural heritage. The decision to present a new effigy underscores the symbolic importance of currency — as both a tool of daily life and a bearer of national identity.

Un nuovo volto per Monaco: la nuova effigie del Principe Alberto II celebra vent’anni di regno
Monaco si prepara a scrivere un nuovo capitolo della propria storia numismatica. In occasione del 20° anniversario di regno di S.A.S. il Principe Alberto II, il Principato ha presentato la nuova effigie sovrana che apparirà sulle monete da 1 e 2 euro. Le nuove emissioni, datate 2025, entreranno in circolazione alla fine di ottobre, come annunciato dalla Tesoreria generale delle finanze di Monaco.
Il ritratto aggiornato raffigura il Principe Alberto II di fronte — una scelta inedita rispetto al profilo tradizionale che ornava le monete monegasche dal 2005. Questa inquadratura frontale conferisce all’immagine un’aura più solenne e contemporanea, esaltando al tempo stesso l’autorevolezza e la serenità del Sovrano. Accanto al volto compaiono il monogramma coronato e il fuselé d’argento e di rosso dello stemma dei Grimaldi, richiamo visivo all’identità secolare del Principato.
Il cambiamento non è soltanto estetico. Simboleggia vent’anni di continuità e trasformazione, in un periodo in cui Monaco ha rafforzato il proprio ruolo internazionale, promuovendo sostenibilità, diplomazia e cultura. Rinnovare l’effigie significa anche riaffermare il valore simbolico della moneta: strumento quotidiano, ma anche emblema di sovranità.
