A notarial deed and the official registration of the logo and trademark with the Chamber of Commerce of Catania have marked the birth of the first European Women in Jazz Award, an international talent competition dedicated to young female rising stars of jazz.
The project originates in Catania and is spearheaded by Antonella Consolo, a renowned jazz musician and accomplished manager with international business interests spanning Dubai, New York, Paris and London. Well known in Sanremo for having performed for many years with the Casino Orchestra conducted by Sergio Nanni, Consolo is now bringing to life an ambitious initiative designed to support and promote the next generation of female jazz artists. The Artistic Director of the project is journalist Ilio Masprone.
This unique all-female talent competition aims to showcase emerging jazz musicians from some of Europe’s most prestigious conservatories and music institutions, including the Conservatorium Maastricht in the Netherlands, the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, Rome’s Santa Cecilia Conservatory, Berlin’s Hanns Eisler School of Music, Milan’s Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory, Naples’ San Pietro a Majella Conservatory, the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, and the Niccolò Paganini State Conservatory of Music in Genoa, among others.
For the organization of the event, Antonella Consolo will be supported by a team of highly qualified professionals, while the artistic direction has been entrusted to Ilio Masprone, who is now free from previous organizational commitments within the entertainment industry.
In the coming weeks, the organizers will finalize the official competition rules. Young musicians wishing to participate will not be required to pay any registration fees. On the contrary, the three winners will receive scholarships and will also earn the opportunity to perform at a dedicated women’s jazz festival currently in development.
Among the future stages planned for the initiative, Sanremo is expected to play a prominent role, further strengthening the connection between the project and one of Italy’s most iconic music destinations.
Meanwhile, a distinguished jury is being assembled to evaluate the candidates. Among the names being considered for the presidency is renowned Italian broadcaster and musician Renzo Arbore, a lifelong enthusiast and supporter of jazz music.
Applications for the European Women in Jazz Award will officially open next October through dedicated social media channels on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, as well as through an official website currently under development.

Un atto notarile e il deposito del logo e del marchio presso la Camera di Commercio di Catania hanno sancito la nascita del primo European Women in Jazz Award, un talent internazionale dedicato alle giovani promesse femminili del jazz.
Il progetto nasce a Catania ed è promosso da Antonella Consolo, nota musicista jazz e oggi affermata manager con importanti attività internazionali tra Dubai, New York, Parigi e Londra. Consolo è inoltre conosciuta a Sanremo per aver cantato per molti anni con l’Orchestra del Casinò diretta da Sergio Nanni. Ad affiancarla in questa nuova avventura sarà un team di professionisti qualificati, mentre la Direzione Artistica è stata affidata al giornalista Ilio Masprone.
L’iniziativa si presenta come un progetto innovativo e interamente al femminile, pensato per sostenere, valorizzare e promuovere giovani musiciste emergenti provenienti da alcuni dei più prestigiosi conservatori e istituti musicali europei. Tra questi figurano il Conservatorium Maastricht nei Paesi Bassi, il Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana di Lugano, il Conservatorio Santa Cecilia di Roma, l’Universität der Künste Hanns Eisler di Berlino, il Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi di Milano, il Conservatorio San Pietro a Majella di Napoli, il Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse di Parigi, l’University of Music and Performing Arts di Vienna e il Conservatorio Statale Niccolò Paganini di Genova.
In queste settimane Antonella Consolo sta definendo il regolamento ufficiale del concorso. Le giovani artiste che desidereranno partecipare non dovranno sostenere alcun costo di iscrizione. Al contrario, le tre vincitrici riceveranno una borsa di studio e avranno inoltre l’opportunità di esibirsi in un festival jazz interamente al femminile attualmente in fase di programmazione.
Tra le future tappe del progetto è prevista anche Sanremo, città simbolo della musica italiana, che potrebbe rappresentare uno degli appuntamenti più prestigiosi dell’iniziativa.
Nel frattempo è in fase di costituzione una giuria di alto profilo che sarà chiamata a valutare le candidate e a decretare le vincitrici. Per la presidenza si guarda a Renzo Arbore, da sempre grande appassionato e promotore della cultura jazzistica.
Le iscrizioni all’European Women in Jazz Award apriranno ufficialmente il prossimo ottobre attraverso i canali social dedicati su Facebook, Instagram e TikTok, oltre a un sito web attualmente in fase di realizzazione.
Con questa iniziativa, l’Italia si candida a diventare un punto di riferimento europeo per la valorizzazione del talento femminile nel jazz, offrendo alle nuove generazioni di musiciste un’importante piattaforma di crescita, visibilità e opportunità professionali.
