Passion, an unmistakable face, and ambition: this is how we can summarize Jacques Perrin’s journey through the world of cinema. The French actor and director, who passed away in 2022, left an indelible mark on the art world that even his loss has been unable to erase.
It is for this reason that Allons Voir, the Institut français Italia, and the artist’s family have come together to commemorate his memory. During this year’s Rome Film Festival, visitors can attend an exhibition dedicated to honoring his entire career.
The event, running from October 13 to November 4 at Rome’s Casa del Cinema, is titled: “Jacques Perrin. The Eternal Boy” (Jacques Perrin. L’eterno ragazzo). While the film screening retrospective, which kicked off on October 10, has concluded on October 14, the biographical and photographic exhibition will continue, showcasing personal memories shared by his family.
The final screening stands as a symbol of Perrin’s love for Italy: Nuovo Cinema Paradiso. Co-produced by the artist, who also starred in the film, it was described by Perrin himself as: “Not just a film, but a declaration of love to cinema.” The movie served as a launchpad for Giuseppe Tornatore, then a young director working with a limited budget, but armed with a story Jacques considered universal, offering an unmissable opportunity to help a new filmmaker bring his vision to completion.
Tornatore, now an acclaimed, world-renowned director, paid tribute to his colleague on October 14 at 6:30 pm at the Casa del Cinema, where the screening taken place. In the film, Jacques Perrin plays the adult Salvatore (Totò), a director at the peak of his career. Perhaps that is why, despite the many other acclaimed works he produced and the Academy Awards won, Perrin always maintained: “Acting in that film was like looking into a mirror of my own life and my passion for this craft.”
His craft was also frequently a mouthpiece for social and environmental causes. Perrin actively participated in international initiatives, including marine ecosystem conservation efforts in Monaco, which earned him a place among the prestigious guests at the Monte-Carlo Gala for the Global Ocean charity event.
His career was bold and visionary; as part of the Rome retrospective, audiences will also have the chance to watch Océans in its original language with subtitles, a documentary that exposes the environmental threats facing our macrocosm in pursuit of a nature freely restored from pollution.
Ultimately, through this tribute curated by Rémi Guittet and Gian Luca Farinelli, cinema once again renders an artist eternal. As Jacques Perrin himself once put it:
“Filming is a symbol of protected memory, an immortal archive of what we risked losing.”
