Il 12 luglio non è una data qualunque nel cuore del popolo monegasco. È il giorno in cui, nel 2005, il Principe Alberto II divenne ufficialmente Sovrano di Monaco. Dopo mesi di lutto per la scomparsa del padre, il compianto Principe Ranieri III, il popolo si strinse attorno al nuovo Principe in una giornata di emozione, solennità e rinnovata speranza.

July 12 is not an ordinary date in the hearts of the Monegasque people. It marks the day, in 2005, when Prince Albert II officially became Sovereign of Monaco. After months of mourning the loss of his father, the late Prince Rainier III, the people gathered around their new Prince in a day filled with emotion, solemnity, and renewed hope.
IT – L’inizio ufficiale del regno
La giornata si aprì con una Messa solenne nella Cattedrale di San Nicola, presieduta dall’arcivescovo Bernard Barsi. Fu un momento di raccoglimento spirituale, ma anche l’occasione per rendere omaggio al passato e benedire il futuro. Più tardi, nel pomeriggio, 7.000 monegaschi furono invitati nel cortile del Palazzo per un ricevimento conviviale, a simboleggiare l’unione tra il sovrano e il suo popolo.
EN – The official start of the reign
The day began with a solemn Mass at Saint Nicholas Cathedral, led by Archbishop Bernard Barsi. It was a spiritual moment, but also one of transition—from honoring the past to embracing the future. Later that afternoon, 7,000 native Monegasques were welcomed into the Palace courtyard for a warm garden party, symbolizing the bond between the Sovereign and his people.
IT – Un discorso, due chiavi e uno spettacolo nel cielo
Durante la celebrazione, il Principe Alberto ricevette due chiavi simboliche della città, rafforzando il suo legame con il territorio. Poi, rivolgendosi ai suoi concittadini, pronunciò il 1 primo discorso ufficiale da Sovrano. La giornata si concluse con uno spettacolo pirotecnico sul porto, che illuminò la Rocca in un abbraccio di luce e speranza.
EN – A speech, two keys, and fireworks in the sky
During the celebration, Prince Albert was presented with two symbolic keys to the city, reinforcing his connection to the land and its people. Then, in his first official speech as Sovereign, he addressed his citizens with sincerity and vision. The day ended with a breathtaking fireworks display over the harbor, lighting up the Rock in a glowing embrace of light and hope.

Sebbene il 12 luglio segnasse l’inizio del suo regno, la cerimonia di investitura ufficiale si tenne qualche mese dopo, il 19 novembre 2005, in coincidenza con la Festa Nazionale. Fu un altro momento storico: una Messa solenne alla presenza di reali da tutta Europa, seguita da una serata di gala e uno spettacolo all’Opéra de Monte-Carlo.

Although July 12 marked the start of his reign, the official investiture ceremony took place a few months later, on November 19, 2005, coinciding with Monaco’s National Day. It was another historic moment: a Pontifical Mass attended by royalty from across Europe, followed by a gala dinner and a festive performance at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo.
