Travelling by train through the heart of the Roya Valley

VENTIMIGLIA-BREIL – Inaugurated last July 6, the Ventimiglia – Tende route on the “Cento Porte” train was active throughout the summer. The initiative, aimed at helping as many border residents as possible – such as those from Cuneo, Liguria, France, and not forgetting Monaco – to discover the Roya Valley by train, was a remarkable success.
In fact, there are cross-border destinations much loved by Monegasques, located just a few kilometres northeast of Monaco, either by rail or by road that winds along the valley of the picturesque Roya River, up to the new Tenda Tunnel. The tunnel reopened to traffic after five years of closure on June 27 and is currently operating with alternating one-way traffic regulated by traffic lights.
The tunnel had been closed in 2020 due to problems related to the doubling project and the Alex storm, but its reopening – strongly supported by the Italian and French Infrastructure Ministers – has finally taken place, giving new life and creative impetus to the entire valley.
By road, the national route crosses the Roya Valley, from Breil-sur-Roya to Tende, and is accessible from Menton via Sospel through the Col de Brouis. To visit the Roya Valley by road, a paradise just twenty minutes from the sea by car, we suggest starting from a prestigious place such as the Cala del Forte port, leased for 99 years to Monaco by the Municipality of Ventimiglia. From there, follow the Roya River, which begins at Airole, a village just a few kilometres from Ventimiglia, before entering the heart of the French Mercantour National Park, passing through the villages of Breil-sur-Roya, Fontan, Saorge, La Brigue and Tende.
The Roya Valley is a paradise for the eyes and for the heart. In just a few minutes, one moves from Mediterranean olive groves to Alpine pine forests… With its vast park for lovers of sports and thrills, its ancient villages perched on the heights and along the riverbanks, the remarkable diversity of flora and fauna, not to mention the Vallée des Merveilles and its 40,000 rock carvings, its treasures are countless!
In terms of public transport, all available options can usually be found directly on the Côte d’Azur Transport website. But as we describe in this article, there are praiseworthy initiatives such as the Italian “Cento Porte” and the French “Roya Express,” both created to promote sustainable and inclusive mobility.
Last summer, the unprecedented Italian opportunity was to discover, “by train,” landscapes, culture, gastronomy, and activities. Our editorial team, invited by colleague journalist and photographer Benjamin Godart from Monaco Tribune, boarded the historic train between Ventimiglia and Tende and here shares the extraordinary experience lived.
The whistle of a “Cento Porte” train that echoed through Ventimiglia station introduced us to a historic 1930s train, still operating in several regions of Italy, which took us to the village of Tende, in the heart of the Roya Valley.
Since the beginning of the summer, these magnificent vintage carriages have replaced the “Train des Merveilles,” which usually connects Nice to Tende – a TER line currently under construction until the end of 2025 – allowing travellers to discover the landscapes and towns of the valley.
The initiative is part of the European ALCOTRA Vermenagna-Roya III project, which anticipates the centenary of the Cuneo-Ventimiglia-Nice line in 2028. Beyond the picturesque excursion, the project has a broader cross-border ambition: to promote sustainable family tourism in the Roya and Vermenagna valleys, weakened by the natural disasters of recent years.
After the summer, to provide continuity to the Italian “Cento Porte,” came the French project of the “Roya Express-Vesubie.” The initiative was very successful, offering the “Mobility Week 2025” from September 16 to 22, as part of the “European Mobility Week.”
Throughout 2026, the “Roya Express” team will be present every month alongside local stakeholders, supporting valley residents on the theme of sustainable and inclusive mobility. Individual consultations for those seeking transport solutions, open workshops, and tests of the electric bicycle fleet to be provided will be offered by the young and enthusiastic inclusive and solidarity mobility consultant Giulia Fiscato, all with the aim of exploring mobility through current solutions and others to be developed together.
This event served to encourage citizens and communities from many European countries to opt for more sustainable modes of transport. The implementation of the “Roya Express” initiative was a fun mobility challenge to discover the options of organised hitchhiking and public transport in the valley.
The team ensuring the continuity of events and projects consists of Giulia Fiscato, the key point of reference, and Julie Lallement, Head of Regional Development for Inclusive and Sustainable Mobility. Always by bike, hitchhiking, by bus or carpooling, Giulia is the local specialist in inclusive and sustainable mobility.

VENTIMIGLIA-BREIL – Inaugurato il 6 luglio scorso, l’itinerario Ventimiglia – Tenda sul treno “Cento porte” è stato attivo per tutta l’estate. L’iniziativa, intesa a far scoprire la Valle della Roya viaggiando in treno al maggior numero di persone fontaliere come i cuneesi, i liguri, i francesi, senza dimenticare i monegaschi, ha riportato un notevole successo.
Infatti, ci sono mete frontaliere molto amate dai monegaschi che si trovano a pochi chilometri a nord-est di Monaco, sia per ferrovia, sia attraverso la strada che si snoda lungo la Valle del pittoresco fiume Roya, fino al nuovo Tunnel di Tenda, riaperto al traffico dopo cinque anni di chiusura il 27 giugno scorso e il cui funzionamento attuale è a senso unico alternato regolato da semafori.
Il tunnel è stato chiuso nel 2020 a causa di problemi legati al progetto di raddoppio e alla tempesta Alex, ma infine la riapertura, fortemente voluta dai ministri delle Infrastrutture italiano e francese, è avvenuta, donando nuova vita ed impulso creativo anche a tutta la vallata.
Su strada, la nazionale attraversa la valle della Roya, da Breil-sur-Roya a Tende, ed è accessibile da Mentone via Sospel attraverso il Col de Brouis. Per visitare su strafa la Valle del Roya, un angolo di paradiso a venti minuti dal mare in auto, dal Principato vi consigliamo di partire da un luogo prestigioso come il porto di Cala del Forte, ceduto per 99 anni a Monaco dal Comune di Ventimiglia, proseguire lungo il fiume Roya il cui corso inizia ad Airole, paesino a pochi chilometri da Ventimiglia, per poi addentrarsi nel cuore del Parco Nazionale francese del Mercantour, toccando i villaggi di Breil-sur-Roya, Fontan, Saorge, La Brigue e Tende.
La Valle della Roya è un paradiso per gli occhi e per il cuore. In pochi minuti, si passa dagli uliveti mediterranei alle foreste di pini alpini… Con il suo vasto parco per gli amanti dello sport e del brivido, gli antichi villaggi arroccati sulle alture e sulle rive, la notevole diversità di flora e fauna, per non parlare della Vallée des Merveilles e delle sue 40.000 incisioni rupestri, non si contano le sue ricchezze!
Su trasporto pubblico, normalmente si trovano tutte le opzioni di trasporto disponibili direttamente sul sito dei Trasporti della Costa Azzurra, per poi scoprire, come descriviamo in questo articolo, lodevoli iniziative come quella italiana del “Cento Porte” e quella francese del ”Roya Express”, entrambe nate per promuovere una mobilità sostenibile e inclusiva.
L’estate scorsa, l’occasione inedita italiana è stata quella di scoprire “via treno” paesaggi, cultura, gastronomia e attività… La nostra redazione, che è salita a bordo del treno storico tra Ventimiglia e Tende su invito del collega giornalista e fotografo Benjamin Godart di Monaco Tribune, vi racconta qui di seguito la straordinaria esperienza vissuta.
Il fischio di un treno “Cento porte” che è risuonato alla stazione di Ventimiglia ci ha fatto scoprire infatti un treno storico degli anni ’30 che circola ancora in diverse regioni d’Italia, e che ci ha portati fino al villaggio di Tende, nel cuore della valle della Roya.
Dall’inizio dell’estate, queste magnifiche carrozze d’altri tempi hanno preso il posto del “Train des Merveilles” che collega Nizza a Tende – una linea TER attualmente in fase di lavori fino alla fine del 2025 – per far scoprire i paesaggi e le città della valle.
L’iniziativa fa parte del progetto europeo ALCOTRA Vermenagna-Roya III, che preannuncia il centenario della linea Cuneo-Ventimiglia-Nizza nel 2028. Al di là dell’escursione pittoresca, il progetto ha un’ambizione transfrontaliera più ampia: incentivare un turismo familiare sostenibile nelle valli della Roya e della Vermenagna, indebolite dalle calamità naturali degli ultimi anni.
Finita l’estate, a dare una sorta di continuità al “Cento porte” italiano è stato il progetto francese del “Roya Express- Vesubie”. L’niziativa ha ottenuto un grande successo, offrendo la “settimana della mobilità 2025” dal 16 al 22 settembre, e questo nell’ambito della “Settimana Europea della Mobilità”.
Per tutto il 2026, il team del “Roya Express” sarà presente e disponibile ogni mese a fianco degli stakeholder locali, per supportare i residenti della valle sul tema della mobilità sostenibile e inclusiva. Consulenze individuali per chi cerca in cerca soluzioni di trasporto, workshop aperti a tutti e test della flotta di biciclette elettriche da fornire saranno offerti dalla giovane ed entusiasta consulente per la mobilità inclusiva e solidale Giulia Fiscato, il tutto al fine di esplorare la mobilità con soluzioni attuali e altre da sviluppare insieme.
Questo evento è servito ad incoraggiare cittadini e comunità di molti paesi europei a optare per modalità di trasporto più sostenibili. La realizzazione dell’iniziativa “Roya Express” è stata una divertente sfida di mobilità per scoprire le opzioni di autostop organizzato e di trasporto pubblico nella valle.
Il Team che si occupa della continuità dei progetti manifestazioni è formato da Giulia Fiscato, che ne è la referente chiave, e da Julie Lallement, responsabile dello Sviluppo Regionale per la Mobilità Inclusiva e Sostenibile.
