Princess Grace of Monaco may no longer be with us to witness today’s shifting trends, but Her Serene Highness remains the ultimate icon of beauty and style. Decades later, she continues to inspire many contemporary celebrities and influencers, like Elle Fanning and Alexandra Saint Mleux, and still graces the covers of top magazines—last year, Vanity Fair France dedicated its August issue to the enduring legacy of Princess Grace.
Inspired by Vogue’s iconic Beauty Secrets series, I’ve gathered some tips from Grace Kelly to share with you (props to Vogue!).
Grace Kelly famously wore little to no makeup when she wasn’t on set or attending events on her royal schedule. She once said: “When Ava Gardner gets in a taxi, the driver knows at once she’s Ava Gardner. It’s the same for Lana Turner or Elizabeth Taylor, but not for me. I’m never Grace Kelly. I’m always someone who looks like Grace Kelly.” I believe she felt this way because of how naturally she presented herself off-screen.
Grace was religious about staying hydrated and avoided smoking entirely. In fact, she even refused to smoke in movies like Rear Window (1954). Due to the Kelly family’s love for sports, she also exercised regularly, being particularly fond of swimming and ballet. Grace also took great care of her hands; she always made sure to moisturize them because she believed the first signs of aging appear there.
For Grace, beauty meant being natural. She was definitely a “skincare-over-makeup” type of girl. She proved this in her iconic photoshoot with Howell Conant in Jamaica for Collier’s magazine, where she wore little to no makeup at all.
That being said, Grace’s simplicity didn’t mean she wasn’t glamorous—she absolutely was. She is still considered one of the most glamorous women to this day, and makeup certainly played a part in that. She often used two shades of blush to define her cheekbones: a darker tone in the hollows and a lighter shade on the apples.
During the day, she preferred nude eyeshadow for a soft, natural look. At night, she opted for elegant grey tones. Grace favored light pink or coral lipsticks, though she wasn’t afraid to wear a bold red lip for special events or film roles. She also filled in her brows and steered clear of eyeliner under the eyes—always keeping her look clean and sophisticated.
When it comes to hair, Grace is known for her classic waves, but as a Princess in the late ’60s and throughout the rest of her life, she wasn’t afraid to try new and bold haircuts. She also enjoyed wearing a statement headpiece with her glamorous gowns. Finally, Grace had a signature scent—Creed Fleurissimo—which was created especially for her to wear on her wedding day.
So, what can we learn from Grace’s beauty secrets? Take care of yourself, embrace your natural beauty, and don’t be afraid to explore what suits you. And, most importantly, always be unapologetically you.

La Principessa Grace di Monaco non è più con noi per assistere ai continui cambiamenti delle tendenze, ma Sua Altezza Serenissima resta un’icona intramontabile di bellezza e stile. A distanza di decenni, continua a ispirare celebrità e influencer contemporanee come Elle Fanning e Alexandra Saint Mleux, e appare ancora sulle copertine delle più importanti riviste di moda: lo scorso anno Vanity Fair France ha dedicato il numero di agosto all’eredità senza tempo della Principessa Grace.
Ispirandomi all’iconica serie Beauty Secrets di Vogue, ho raccolto alcuni consigli di bellezza di Grace Kelly da condividere con voi (grazie a Vogue!).
Grace Kelly era famosa per indossare pochissimo trucco, o addirittura nessuno, quando non era sul set o impegnata negli eventi del suo calendario reale. Una volta disse: «Quando Ava Gardner sale su un taxi, l’autista capisce subito che è Ava Gardner. Lo stesso vale per Lana Turner o Elizabeth Taylor, ma non per me. Io non sono mai Grace Kelly. Sono sempre qualcuno che le somiglia». Credo che si sentisse così proprio per il modo naturale con cui si mostrava lontano dalle luci della ribalta.
Grace era estremamente attenta all’idratazione e non fumava mai. Anzi, si rifiutò persino di fumare in film come La finestra sul cortile (1954). Cresciuta in una famiglia amante dello sport, si allenava regolarmente, prediligendo in particolare il nuoto e la danza classica. Aveva inoltre grande cura delle mani: le idratava costantemente, convinta che i primi segni dell’invecchiamento compaiano proprio lì.
Per Grace, la bellezza coincideva con la naturalezza. Era senza dubbio una sostenitrice del concetto “skincare prima del makeup”. Lo dimostrò anche nel celebre servizio fotografico realizzato da Howell Conant in Giamaica per Collier’s, dove apparve con pochissimo trucco, se non del tutto assente.
Detto questo, la semplicità di Grace non significava affatto rinunciare al glamour—tutt’altro. È ancora oggi considerata una delle donne più affascinanti di sempre, e il trucco giocava sicuramente un ruolo importante. Amava utilizzare due tonalità di blush per scolpire gli zigomi: una più scura nelle incavature e una più chiara sulle parti più prominenti.
Durante il giorno preferiva ombretti nude per un look delicato e naturale; la sera, invece, sceglieva eleganti tonalità di grigio. Prediligeva rossetti rosa chiaro o corallo, ma non aveva timore di osare con un rosso intenso in occasione di eventi speciali o ruoli cinematografici. Riempiva leggermente le sopracciglia ed evitava l’eyeliner nella rima inferiore dell’occhio, mantenendo sempre un’estetica pulita e sofisticata.
Per quanto riguarda i capelli, Grace è celebre per le sue onde classiche, ma negli ultimi anni ’60 e per il resto della sua vita, in qualità di Principessa, non ebbe paura di sperimentare tagli più audaci e moderni. Amava anche impreziosire i suoi abiti da sera con copricapi scenografici. Infine, Grace aveva una fragranza simbolo: Fleurissimo di Creed, creata appositamente per lei in occasione del suo matrimonio.
Cosa possiamo imparare dai segreti di bellezza di Grace? Prendersi cura di sé, valorizzare la propria bellezza naturale e non avere paura di esplorare ciò che ci fa sentire al meglio. E, soprattutto, essere sempre sé stesse, senza chiedere scusa.
