Love Letters: When the Prince of Monaco Met the Girl from Philadelphia

love letter from Rainier to Grace before she leaved New York for the wedding in the Constitution.

It is well known that after their first meeting in May 1955, Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III lived a romance through letters. While the press speculated and the world watched, the two of them were quietly building a future with pen and paper.

Following the 70th anniversary of their wedding, we look back at a specific and intimate moment from April 1956. Grace was in New York, preparing to board the SS Constitution—a journey that would change her life forever.

Just before she set sail, she received a final note from the Prince. He did not write as a Sovereign, but as a man deeply in love:

“My Darling, this to tell in a very mild way how terribly much I love you, miss you, need you and want you near me always. Safe trip my love, rest, relax and think of me burning myself out with this terrible longing of you, for you! I love you so.”

I cannot help but admire the raw romance in this gesture. We often see them as untouchable icons, but here we witness a confession of true longing, almost like something out of a novel.

It is a powerful reminder that even in the highest circles of royalty, the most meaningful thing you can give someone is your words.

Can we bring love letters back? Grace Kelly would certainly approve.

“My Darling, this to tell in a very mild way how terribly much I love you, miss you, need you and want you near me always. Safe trip my love, rest, relax and think of me burning myself out with this terrible longing of you, for you! I love you so.”

Grace Kelly, senza dubbio, approverebbe.
