After Berlin, Formula E returns this weekend to Monaco. The big question is: will Pascal Wehrlein keep his lead, or will Mitch Evans maintain his momentum and overtake him to lead the championship?
This year, the championship features two additional races, and with the latest generation of cars, the thrill of electric racing is at an all-time high. Across 17 races in 11 cities, the world’s most famous street circuit brings a unique pressure to every driver, regardless of the category. Saying that you won a race in Monaco carries an even greater sense of pride in a driver’s career. How Does a Formula E Weekend Work?
Unlike Formula 1, the action is concentrated into Saturday and Sunday. The weekend features two qualifying sessions and two races. Qualifying begins with the grid divided into two groups: Group A (odd-numbered championship positions) and Group B (even-numbered positions). Each group has 10 minutes to set their fastest lap; the four fastest drivers from each then advance to the Duels. These quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals are head-to-head battles that determine the final grid positions.
Technical Mastery: Adapting to Monaco
Since 2021, as battery technology has become more powerful, Formula E has utilized the iconic, full Monaco circuit. We see these cars power up from Sainte-Dévote to the Casino. The circuit still features the legendary Hairpin, which remains incredibly difficult for overtaking; however, when a move is made, it creates a spectacular moment for the fans. The cars then fly through the Tunnel, reaching higher speeds than anywhere else on the track.
The GEN3 EVO cars are more powerful than ever. In 2026, they boast 300kW of base power, while Attack Mode provides an extra 50kW boost, allowing drivers to strategically challenge the cars ahead.
The Experience: Why Watch the E-Prix?
The weekend starts early, with Practice 1 at 07:30 and Practice 2 at 09:10. Sunday follows a similar rhythm with Practice 3, the second qualifying, and the final race. What makes this category so exciting is that the races are shorter but incredibly intense. Due to Attack Mode and the technical similarity between cars, a driver can climb from the bottom to the top in just one lap. Small mistakes on this unforgiving street circuit can take a car, or several, out of the race instantly.
The closeness with the drivers also makes this sport exceptionally fan-friendly, offering opportunities to interact before the sessions. Quest’anno il campionato prevede due gare aggiuntive e, con l’ultima generazione di vetture, lo spettacolo delle corse elettriche è ai massimi storici. Attraverso 17 gare in 11 città, il circuito cittadino più famoso al mondo mette ogni pilota sotto una pressione unica, indipendentemente dalla categoria. Dire di aver vinto una gara a Monaco porta con sé un orgoglio ancora più grande nella carriera di un pilota. Dopo le vittorie dello scorso anno di Oliver Rowland al sabato e Sébastien Buemi alla domenica, assisteremo a un nuovo vincitore nel Principato o ritroveremo un volto già noto sul podio? Come funziona un weekend di Formula E?
A differenza della Formula 1, tutta l’azione si concentra tra sabato e domenica. Il weekend comprende due sessioni di qualifiche e due gare. Le qualifiche iniziano con la griglia divisa in due gruppi: Gruppo A (posizioni dispari del campionato) e Gruppo B (posizioni pari). Ogni gruppo ha 10 minuti per segnare il proprio giro più veloce; i quattro piloti più rapidi di ciascun gruppo accedono poi ai Duels. Questi quarti di finale, semifinali e finali sono sfide testa a testa che determinano le posizioni definitive sulla griglia di partenza.
Maestria tecnica: adattarsi a Monaco
Dal 2021, grazie a batterie sempre più potenti, la Formula E utilizza l’iconico circuito completo di Monaco. Vediamo queste vetture scattare dalla Sainte-Dévote fino al Casinò. Il tracciato include ancora il leggendario tornante del Fairmont Hairpin, che rimane estremamente difficile per i sorpassi; tuttavia, quando un sorpasso riesce, regala un momento spettacolare ai tifosi. Le vetture poi sfrecciano nel Tunnel, raggiungendo velocità più elevate rispetto a qualsiasi altro punto del circuito.
Le monoposto GEN3 EVO sono più potenti che mai. Nel 2026 vantano 300 kW di potenza base, mentre l’Attack Mode fornisce un incremento extra di 50 kW, permettendo ai piloti di sfidare strategicamente le vetture davanti a loro.
L’esperienza: perché guardare l’E-Prix?
Il weekend inizia presto, con le Prove Libere 1 alle 07:30 e le Prove Libere 2 alle 09:10. La domenica segue un ritmo simile con le Prove Libere 3, la seconda sessione di qualifiche e la gara finale. Ciò che rende questa categoria così emozionante è che le gare sono più brevi ma incredibilmente intense. Grazie all’Attack Mode e alla somiglianza tecnica tra le vetture, un pilota può passare dal fondo del gruppo alla testa in un solo giro. Piccoli errori su questo circuito cittadino così impegnativo possono eliminare immediatamente una o più vetture dalla gara.
