On one of the shortest and most technical circuits on the calendar, Kimi Antonelli emerged as the fastest driver of FP1, leading a Mercedes one-two and confirming the team’s impressive momentum throughout the season.
The Italian driver stopped the clock at 1:07.796, edging out his teammate George Russell by just 40 thousandths of a second. The battle between the two Silver Arrows was one of the main highlights of the session, with both drivers showing strong confidence around the Spielberg circuit and immediately setting the benchmark for the weekend.
Antonelli’s performance once again highlighted his extraordinary 2026 campaign. After becoming one of the leading figures of the championship, the young Mercedes driver continued to demonstrate his ability to extract maximum performance from the car, even on a circuit where braking precision, traction and tyre management are essential.

Max Verstappen completed the top four with Red Bull, finishing just over two tenths behind Antonelli. The Dutchman remained within striking distance, suggesting that the fight for the top positions could become extremely tight once qualifying arrives. Lewis Hamilton placed fifth with Ferrari, six and a half tenths away from the benchmark, while the second Ferrari was driven by Dino Beganovic as part of the rookie programme and finished ninth.
For Ferrari, the first session at Spielberg was more about collecting information than chasing the perfect lap. After the positive signs shown in recent races, the Scuderia will need to analyse the behaviour of the SF-26 on a circuit that rewards aerodynamic efficiency and strong acceleration out of slow corners. Hamilton’s position in the top five keeps expectations alive, while Charles Leclerc will be looking to find more performance in the following sessions.
The Austrian weekend has therefore started with a familiar picture: Mercedes remains the reference, Antonelli continues to impress, and the battle behind the Silver Arrows remains wide open.

Il paddock della Formula 1 si è spostato al Red Bull Ring per il Gran Premio d’Austria 2026 e la prima sessione di prove libere ha subito regalato un messaggio importante. Su uno dei circuiti più brevi e tecnici del calendario, Kimi Antonelli è stato il più veloce nelle FP1, firmando il miglior tempo e regalando alla Mercedes una doppietta che conferma il grande momento della squadra.
Il pilota italiano ha fermato il cronometro sull’1:07.796, precedendo il compagno di squadra George Russell di appena 40 millesimi di secondo. Il duello interno alle Frecce d’Argento è stato uno dei temi principali della sessione, con entrambi i piloti subito competitivi e capaci di trovare un ottimo feeling con il tracciato di Spielberg.
La prestazione di Antonelli rappresenta l’ennesima conferma di una stagione 2026 da protagonista assoluto. Il giovane pilota Mercedes continua a dimostrare una maturità sorprendente, riuscendo a sfruttare al massimo le caratteristiche della monoposto anche su una pista dove frenate precise, trazione e gestione degli pneumatici possono fare la differenza.
Alle spalle delle due Mercedes si è inserita la McLaren di Oscar Piastri, terza a soli 117 millesimi dalla vetta. Il pilota australiano ha confermato la competitività della squadra di Woking, mantenendo la vettura nelle zone alte della classifica anche su un circuito che mette alla prova equilibrio e velocità in uscita di curva.
Max Verstappen ha chiuso in quarta posizione con la Red Bull, a poco più di due decimi dal miglior tempo. Per la Ferrari il primo appuntamento a Spielberg è stato soprattutto un momento di raccolta dati. Dopo i progressi mostrati nelle ultime gare, la Scuderia dovrà ora analizzare il comportamento della SF-26 su un tracciato che premia efficienza aerodinamica, velocità sui rettilinei e capacità di scaricare a terra la potenza in uscita dalle curve lente. Il quinto posto di Hamilton mantiene comunque alte le aspettative in vista delle prossime sessioni.
Il weekend austriaco è quindi iniziato con un copione ormai familiare: Mercedes davanti a tutti, Antonelli sempre più protagonista e una lotta alle sue spalle ancora completamente aperta.
