The quintessence of French craftsmanship takes shape in a remarkable one-off creation: the Beware of the Crocodile – Alpine Lacoste A290 Rallye, a statement of design, innovation and sporting spirit set to redefine the dialogue between automotive culture and contemporary luxury.
Some collaborations are born purely from marketing strategies, while others feel like the natural convergence of two successful stories, each destined to meet at a higher level of excellence. ALPINE X LACOSTE undoubtedly belongs to the latter category. On one side, Alpine, the brand that has transformed lightness and driving pleasure into a design philosophy; on the other, Lacoste, the maison that elevated sportswear into a symbol of impeccable elegance and outstanding performance. Two seemingly distant worlds that, in reality, share the same language of precision, innovation and refinement: French savoir-faire, as highlighted by the designers behind both brands.
The result is Beware of the Crocodile – Alpine Lacoste A290 Rallye, an almost mythical creation that goes far beyond a conventional design exercise. This one-off will not simply be an exhibition vehicle. It is not merely an aesthetic reinterpretation of the new A290 Rallye, but a creative project where design, motorsport and visual culture converge into a single object. A contemporary expression of French expertise, conceived to demonstrate how performance and elegance can coexist without compromise or unnecessary ornamentation.
At the heart of this collaboration lies a profound affinity, rooted in the history of the two brands’ founders. René Lacoste and Jean Rédélé were both pioneers who redefined the meaning of sport through continuous innovation. The former revolutionised tennis by introducing a new approach to technical apparel; the latter built Alpine’s legacy around lightweight, essential and extraordinarily efficient cars. Both transformed the pursuit of performance into an aesthetic experience, where every detail serves a precise purpose.
It comes as no surprise, therefore, that the technical foundation chosen for this collaboration is the A290 Rallye, Alpine’s first electric model developed for customer racing teams. A radical platform, created for special stages and representing the most extreme expression of the French brand’s new sporting generation. The decision to start from a competition car rather than a production model immediately reveals the ambition behind the project: not to create a simple styling exercise, but a vehicle capable of exploring new approaches to the pursuit of performance.
Yet it is when viewed up close that the Beware of the Crocodile – Alpine Lacoste A290 Rallye reveals the full complexity of the creative work carried out by the two maisons.
The architecture retains the aggressive character of the Rallye, with widened track, pronounced wheel arches, a large rear diffuser, roof air intake and enlarged spoiler, while every element has been reinterpreted through Lacoste’s distinctive design language. The matte white finish with subtle blue nuances evokes the Alpine landscapes that inspired Jean Rédélé, while the exposed forged carbon is not merely an aesthetic choice, but a tangible reference to the relentless pursuit of lightness — a founding value shared by both brands.
The undisputed protagonist remains the iconic crocodile, which is no longer simply a logo, but a defining narrative element running throughout the entire vehicle. The emblem of the French sportswear maison appears 290 times across the exterior and interior, a number that directly recalls the A290 model name. Three red crocodiles appear in motion on the front bonnet, while the rear window features a three-dimensional crocodile emerging from the bodywork: a predator ready for its decisive strike. Even the lighting signature has been redesigned to evoke the animal’s gaze, proving that every detail has been conceived with an evocative and storytelling-driven approach.
While the exterior conveys the tension of competition, it is inside the cabin that the project reaches its highest level of expressive intensity. The entire interior is immersed in a deep red shade inspired by the tongue of Lacoste’s iconic crocodile, giving life to the “Inside the Crocodile’s Jaws” concept. The effect is deliberately theatrical: the driver metaphorically enters the jaws of the crocodile, surrounded by both technical materials and fashion-inspired details, crafted with the maison’s signature petit piqué fabric and embroidery drawing from its aesthetic heritage. Even the steering wheel and door panels contribute to the dialogue between fashion and motorsport.
What truly makes this collaboration remarkable, however, is the perfect balance between its different identities and the credibility of the final project. This is not simply a styling exercise celebrating two brands, but a new creative approach in which the heritage of both companies and the vision of their designers have given birth to an object that is coherent, credible, functional and performance-driven from both perspectives. Lacoste does not merely sign the interior with a few stylistic references; it actively contributes its expertise to Alpine’s vision without compromising its own identity. At the same time, Alpine does not sacrifice a single millisecond on the stopwatch.
The collaboration extends well beyond the creation of the one-off vehicle. Alpine and Lacoste have also unveiled a capsule collection that transfers the same stylistic codes from the paddock to the wardrobe, with garments and accessories where elegance becomes the perfect synthesis of technical functionality and French craftsmanship.
Completing such a rich creative concept is The Test, the short film produced by Ninety Films, starring actor Pierre Niney alongside BWT Alpine Formula One Team driver Pierre Gasly. An unexpected and ironic pairing that captures the spirit of this collaboration with a sense of lightness and sophistication.
ALPINE X LACOSTE demonstrates that contemporary luxury is not measured solely through exclusive materials or absolute performance, but also through the ability to tell a story, embody excellence and transform craftsmanship into culture.
The Beware of the Crocodile – Alpine Lacoste A290 Rallye will not enter production and will remain a unique creation: exclusive and unrepeatable, like all truly inspired ideas.
