Verstappen Wins a Chaotic Sepang Race as Hamilton Stages a Stunning Comeback

EN.
Max Verstappen is finally back on top. Nine years after his last victory at Sepang, the Dutchman returned to the Malaysian circuit and delivered Red Bull’s first victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season, winning a race that had almost everything: torrential rain, a heavily delayed start, radically different tyre strategies, multiple Safety Car interventions and a dramatic late retirement for George Russell. Verstappen converted pole position into victory after 55 laps, finishing 2.307 seconds ahead of Kimi Antonelli and 4.919 seconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who completed one of the most remarkable recovery drives of the season after falling as low as 18th place in the opening stages.

The race had already become unusual before the lights went out. Heavy tropical rain hit Sepang shortly before the scheduled start, leaving large sections of the track flooded and creating completely different conditions around the circuit. The start was consequently delayed for more than an hour, while the teams faced one of the most difficult tyre decisions of the season. Some drivers opted for intermediate tyres, accepting the risk of a drying track, while others, including Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, gambled on slick compounds despite the remaining water. The decision would have an enormous impact on the opening phase of the race.

When the race finally got underway, Verstappen immediately found himself under pressure. The Red Bull driver had started from pole, but both Mercedes cars made a better getaway, with Antonelli taking the lead and Russell moving ahead of Verstappen as they approached the first corner. The Dutchman, however, remained calm and quickly began to understand the behaviour of the intermediate tyres, while Hamilton and Leclerc paid a heavy price for their decision to start on slicks. The two Ferraris struggled badly for grip on the wet asphalt and rapidly dropped through the field, with Hamilton eventually falling all the way down to 18th position.

The first major turning point came when Valtteri Bottas spun into the gravel, triggering the Safety Car and creating the perfect opportunity for the drivers on intermediates to switch to slick tyres. The timing was crucial because the circuit was drying rapidly, but the teams still had to judge whether another shower could arrive before the track became fully suitable for dry-weather tyres. Verstappen and Antonelli emerged from the pit-stop cycle in a much stronger position, while the drivers who had committed to slicks at the start were forced to live with the consequences of their gamble.

Once the race settled into a more conventional rhythm, Verstappen began to impose his pace. He regained the lead from the Mercedes cars and gradually established control at the front, while Antonelli found himself in a prolonged battle for second with his team-mate Russell. The two Mercedes drivers had been among the strongest performers in the opening phase, but Verstappen’s Red Bull increasingly appeared to have the advantage in both pace and tyre management. With the threat of further rain fading, the race evolved into a strategic battle rather than the unpredictable wet-weather contest that had initially seemed likely.

Behind the leaders, Ferrari began an extraordinary recovery. Hamilton, who had been more than a minute behind the leader after the disastrous opening laps, slowly worked his way back through the field as the track continued to improve. His experience became increasingly important as he found grip, managed his tyres and picked off one rival after another. By the final stages, the seven-time world champion was fighting for a podium position, transforming what initially looked like a disastrous race for Ferrari into a major points haul. Charles Leclerc followed a similar path and recovered from his early difficulties to finish fourth.

Hamilton’s charge reached its decisive moment in the closing stages. A late sequence involving the Virtual Safety Car and then the Safety Car compressed the field once again, giving the Ferrari driver the opportunity to attack Isack Hadjar for third place. Hamilton completed the move at Turn 1 after the restart, while Leclerc followed soon afterwards to take fourth. In the space of only a few laps, Ferrari had gone from losing both cars deep into the field to placing both drivers on the first four positions of the final classification.

The late Safety Car, however, also changed the complexion of Mercedes’ race. George Russell had been fighting at the front and appeared set for a strong podium challenge, but his race came to a sudden end when his Mercedes stopped on the start-finish straight with five laps remaining. It was a particularly painful retirement for the Briton, who had been involved in the battle for second and was desperately trying to limit the championship advantage of team-mate Antonelli. Russell’s retirement allowed Antonelli to secure second place and extend his lead in the drivers’ championship.

Kimi Antonelli therefore leaves Sepang with another important result in his title campaign. The young Mercedes driver had started third and initially led the race before eventually finishing behind Verstappen, but his second place represents a valuable haul of 18 points and further strengthens his position at the top of the championship. Verstappen, meanwhile, finally has the result Red Bull had been waiting for: a victory that confirms the team has recovered much of the competitiveness it appeared to have lost during the first part of the season.

Behind the podium, Isack Hadjar completed an impressive weekend in fifth after starting eighth because of his grid penalty, while Oscar Piastri finished sixth ahead of Liam Lawson and Fernando Alonso. Lando Norris endured a difficult afternoon and finished ninth after losing control of his McLaren behind the Safety Car and running through the gravel, while Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad claimed the final point in tenth. The result therefore produced a fascinating combination of expected front-runners, strategic winners and drivers who benefited from the chaos that had unfolded around them.

For Verstappen, however, this was about much more than 25 points. The victory ends a wait of more than 300 days since his previous Formula 1 win in Abu Dhabi and, perhaps more importantly, represents the first triumph for Red Bull Ford Powertrains in Formula 1. The Dutchman had already shown in qualifying that the RB22 was capable of returning to the front, but Sepang proved that the car could also manage a race under extremely complicated circumstances. Verstappen controlled the crucial phases of the afternoon, responded to the changing track conditions and survived the final restart without giving Antonelli a realistic opportunity to attack.

Sepang therefore delivers a result that could prove significant for the remainder of the championship. Verstappen has finally returned to the top step of the podium, Red Bull has rediscovered winning form, Antonelli has strengthened his championship lead and Ferrari has demonstrated remarkable resilience after one of its most difficult starts to a race this season. What appeared to be a race decided by a risky tyre gamble ultimately became a demonstration of experience, pace and adaptability, with Verstappen emerging from the chaos as the clear winner. After a weekend in which Sepang once again showed why it has always been one of Formula 1’s most unpredictable venues, the championship leaves Malaysia with a very different picture at the front of the grid.

Max Verstappen è tornato a vincere.
