For the first time in modern history, the Principality of Monaco will welcome a papal visit. On 28 March 2026, Pope Leo XIV will travel to the Principality for a one-day apostolic journey that will include meetings with Albert II, Prince of Monaco, encounters with the Catholic community and a public Mass at the Stade Louis II. The visit, expected to last around nine hours, represents a historic moment for the country and highlights the longstanding ties between Monaco and the Holy See.
Arrival in Monaco
The Pope is expected to depart from Vatican City early in the morning and arrive at Monaco’s heliport at 9:00 a.m.
Upon landing, he will be welcomed by Albert II, Prince of Monaco along with representatives of the Principality’s institutions, marking the beginning of the official programme.
Ceremony at the Prince’s Palace
The first formal engagement will take place at the Prince’s Palace of Monaco. A welcome ceremony is scheduled shortly after the Pope’s arrival, followed by a private meeting between the pontiff and the Prince.
The encounter is expected to highlight the historic relationship between the Catholic Church and the Principality, where Catholicism remains the state religion.
Meeting the Catholic community
Later in the morning, Pope Leo XIV will meet clergy and members of the Catholic community at the Cathedral of Our Lady Immaculate, the main church of the Principality and burial place of several members of the Grimaldi family.
During this gathering, the Pope will lead a moment of prayer and deliver a reflection addressed to priests, religious communities and faithful living in Monaco.
Encounter with young people
Another important moment of the visit will take place at the Church of Sainte-Dévote, dedicated to the patron saint of Monaco.
Here the pontiff will meet young people and catechumens, offering a message focused on faith, hope and the role of younger generations in the life of the Church.
Public Mass at Stade Louis II
The central event of the day will take place in the afternoon, when Pope Leo XIV will celebrate Mass at the Stade Louis II.
Thousands of faithful from Monaco and neighbouring regions are expected to attend the liturgy, which will represent the spiritual highlight of the papal visit.
Departure in the evening
At the end of the programme, the Pope will return to Vatican City in the late afternoon, concluding a brief but symbolically important visit.
For Monaco, the event represents a historic moment that strengthens its long-standing ties with the Holy See while bringing together the Principality’s Catholic community for a day of celebration and reflection.

Per la prima volta nella storia recente, il Principato di Monaco si prepara ad accogliere una visita papale. Il 28 marzo 2026, Papa Leone XIV sarà nel Paese per un viaggio apostolico di un giorno che includerà incontri con Alberto II di Monaco, momenti con la comunità cattolica e una grande celebrazione pubblica allo Stade Louis II. La visita, della durata di circa nove ore, rappresenta un evento storico per il Principato e sottolinea i profondi legami tra Monaco e la Santa Sede
L’arrivo nel Principato
Il Pontefice partirà al mattino dalla Città del Vaticano e arriverà all’eliporto di Monaco intorno alle 9:00.
Ad accoglierlo saranno Alberto II di Monaco e le principali autorità del Paese, dando ufficialmente inizio alla giornata di incontri e celebrazioni.
Cerimonia al Palazzo del Principe
Il primo appuntamento ufficiale si svolgerà presso il Prince’s Palace of Monaco, dove è prevista la cerimonia di benvenuto.
Successivamente il Papa incontrerà in forma privata il Principe Alberto II. L’incontro rappresenta un momento simbolico che sottolinea i legami storici tra la Chiesa cattolica e il Principato, dove il cattolicesimo è religione di Stato.
Incontro con la comunità cattolica
Nel corso della mattinata Papa Leone XIV si recherà alla Cathedral of Our Lady Immaculate, principale luogo di culto del Principato e luogo di sepoltura di diversi membri della famiglia Grimaldi.
Qui incontrerà il clero e i fedeli della diocesi, guidando un momento di preghiera e rivolgendo un messaggio alla comunità cattolica locale.
Dialogo con i giovani
La visita proseguirà alla Church of Sainte-Dévote, dedicata alla patrona del Principato.
In questo luogo simbolico il Pontefice incontrerà giovani e catecumeni, ai quali rivolgerà un discorso dedicato alla fede e al ruolo delle nuove generazioni nella società e nella Chiesa.
La Messa allo Stadio Louis II
Il momento centrale della giornata sarà nel pomeriggio, con la celebrazione della Santa Messa allo Stade Louis II.
Sono attesi migliaia di fedeli provenienti dal Principato e dalle regioni vicine, per quella che sarà la celebrazione più partecipata della visita papale.
Il ritorno in Vaticano
Al termine della giornata, nel tardo pomeriggio, Papa Leone XIV lascerà Monaco per fare ritorno in Vaticano, concludendo una visita breve ma dal forte valore simbolico.
Per il Principato si tratta di un evento storico che rafforza il rapporto con la Santa Sede e rappresenta un momento di grande significato spirituale per la comunità cattolica monegasca.
