The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya welcomed Formula 1 back for another crucial chapter of the 2026 season, and the opening free practice session immediately highlighted the importance of development in the new era of racing. On a track traditionally considered one of the best benchmarks for car performance, George Russell emerged as the fastest driver of the day, while Ferrari introduced a major update package designed to close the gap at the front.

Mercedes began the Spanish Grand Prix weekend in the best possible way, with Russell setting the benchmark time of 1:16.363. The British driver appeared comfortable from the first laps around the Montmelò circuit, confirming once again the strong form shown by the Silver Arrows throughout the 2026 campaign.

Behind him, Oscar Piastri placed McLaren in second position, just over two tenths away from the Mercedes. The Australian driver showed strong pace despite reporting some difficulties with the behaviour of the car, proving that McLaren remains one of the strongest forces in the current championship battle.

Ferrari’s focus was not only on the stopwatch, but also on the technical evolution of the SF-26. Charles Leclerc finished third, bringing the updated Ferrari immediately into the fight at the top. The Scuderia arrived in Barcelona with a revised package including aerodynamic changes, a new floor and updates to the front wing and bodywork, all aimed at improving efficiency and overall performance.

The Monegasque driver’s position represented an encouraging first indication for Maranello, especially on a circuit where every weakness of a car tends to emerge. Ferrari used the session to compare the behaviour of the updated SF-26, gathering important data ahead of the decisive phases of the weekend.

Max Verstappen completed the top four with Red Bull, remaining close enough to suggest that the battle at the front is far from decided. Behind the leading group, young talents also attracted attention, with Leonardo Fornaroli delivering an impressive performance in fifth position and Paul Aron finishing sixth.

The session was also marked by the presence of several young drivers replacing regular competitors, as part of the mandatory rookie programme. Among them, Dino Beganovic drove Ferrari’s second car without the latest updates, allowing the Scuderia to gather valuable comparison data between the two configurations.

Barcelona once again proved its role as a true test of Formula 1 excellence. Unlike street circuits where confidence and precision can sometimes hide weaknesses, the Montmelò layout rewards pure performance, balance and consistency.

The first message from Spain is therefore clear: Mercedes remains extremely strong, but Ferrari has arrived with a renewed ambition. With the updated SF-26 already showing promising signs, the battle for the top positions promises to be one of the most fascinating stories of the weekend.
