The Met Gala, New York’s most eagerly anticipated fashion exhibition, has already left industryenthusiasts speechless this year, even before the event officially begins. Although news had leakedabout this year’s central theme—an exhibition dedicated to fashion designer John Galliano—the announcement of its cancellation came shortly thereafter.
Some time ago, the artist was engulfed in a scandal following his 2011 arrest for aggressive behavior toward a couple, during which he uttered racist insults and anti-Semitic remarks.
Following repeated requests from Jewish communities, the creative shared the news of the cancellation on his social media profiles, expressing his desire to step back and apologizing once again for his past comments.
The exhibition dedicated to the designer would have been only the third dedicated to a living fashion designer. However, as he himself clarified in his post, the emotional damage caused to the Jewish and Asian communities has deeply affected him and does not erase his faults. The sameincident that led to his dismissal from Dior is thus impacting his career once again, proving yetagain that fashion—as an art form—cannot be separated from its ethical and social responsibility.
The new theme for fashion’s biggest event, which will take place in May 2027, has not yet beenannounced. What is certain for spectators and industry lovers alike is that the choice will be drivennot only by visual spectacle, but also by moral considerations.

La mostra di moda newyorkese più seguita di sempre, il Met Gala, quest’anno lascia a bocca aperta gli amanti del settore, ben prima del suo inizio. Nonostante fosse trapelata la notizia del tema centrale di quest’anno, una mostra dedicata allo stilista John Galliano, in breve tempo l’ha seguita quella della sua cancellazione.
L’artista era stato travolto tempi addietro da uno scandalo dovuto all’arresto del 2011 a seguito di un comportamento aggressivo verso una coppia, generando insulti di stampo razzista e frasi antisemite.
Dopo ripetute richieste da parte delle comunità ebraiche, il creativo ha condiviso la notizia della cancellazione sui suoi profili social esprimendo la volontà di rinunciare e scusandosi nuovamente per i commenti del passato.
Quella dedicata all’autore sarebbe stata la terza mostra dedicata a uno stilista vivente, ma come lui stesso precisa nel post, i danni emotivi arrecati alle comunità ebraiche e asiatiche lo hanno segnato non cancellando le sue colpe. Lo stesso evento che lo portò all’allontanamento da Dior, si ripercuote quindi ancora una volta sulla sua carriera dimostrando ancora una volta come la moda, in quanto forma d’arte, non possa scindersi dalla sua responsabilità etica e sociale.
Il nuovo tema della più grande manifestazione di moda, che si terrà a maggio 2027, non è stato ancora annunciato. Ciò che è sicuro per gli spettatori e amanti del settore, è che a scegliere non sarà solo il lato scenico ma anche quello morale.
