The Venice Lagoon is undoubtedly one of the most picturesque places in the world. Picture yourself walking along its canals, swaying on a gondola, and then stepping ashore on the Lido. Right there, on 2 September, the lights went up on the 83rd Venice International Film Festival.
Under the artistic direction of film critic Alberto Barbera, this edition also concluded successfully on 12 September. A total of 117,656 tickets were sold, reflecting the keen interest in cinema that reflects a complex and harsh reality.
The international jury was chaired by director and actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, who viewed 21 films in competition, ultimately awarding the Golden Lion to the Danish film Kvinde Ukendt – Woman Unknown, a historical drama set in post-WWII Denmark.
Directed by May el-Toukhy, the film tells the story of Marie, a maid and nanny for a wealthy widower who, at the end of the war, is on the verge of achieving social advancement through marriage to her employer. However, the heart of the story focuses on the issue of so-called “horizontal collaborators”—women who formed intimate relationships with Nazi soldiers, Marie being one of them.
Lead actress Mathilde Arcel Fock also won the award for Best Actress: the famous Volpi Cup. Allow me a brief historical note: the cup is named after the founder of the film festival, which was established to revitalise elite tourism on the Lido. Mission accomplished, so much so that the guests attending the festival each year belong to today’s glittering international jet set.
The iconic Ellen Burstyn, George Clooney’s wit, and the power couple Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem are just a few of the names who walked the red carpet. Last but not least, Robert Pattinson—who has come a long way since that vampire saga: Odyssey, Dune, and The Drama have allowed us to rediscover the talent of an actor rapidly securing his place among Hollywood’s finest.
Yet no self-respecting event comes without controversy, and here is mine. Under the banner of “the grass is always greener on the other side”, Italian films were given neither sufficient space nor due recognition. Notable in this regard was Riccardo Scamarcio’s performance in I figli della scimmia, a role that earned him at least the Best Actor award in the Horizons section.
The host of this 83rd edition (woe betide anyone who calls her merely the “godmother”) was also Italian: Greta Scarano. She is known not only for her deep talent but also for her social activism. Her appearance with a red mark on her cheek was particularly moving—a gesture intended to draw attention to the shameful, ongoing issue of femicide.
Hers was a valid and elegant presence, in stark contrast to the line of content creators who crowded the red carpet, striking poses for photographers and blowing kisses to the crowd. It was certainly a marketing stunt that clashed with the tone of the entire festival.
And so the curtain falls on the Venice Lido, and the projectors go dark as the boats slip their moorings.
