AS Monaco: The Squad That (Almost) Wasn’t

AS Monaco’s summer began with a warning from the DNCG. With heavy losses and a hole in the accounts, selling off the club’s top talent looked like the most likely outcome. But despite all the transfer talk around the club’s biggest names, Filipe Luís will still have some of last season’s best players at his disposal, at least until January.

The DNCG had set AS Monaco a series of strict conditions, forcing the club to boost transfer income and slash the wage bill. The outlook wasn’t exactly rosy for Monaco fans, who were ready to say goodbye to their favourites, Camara and Balogun above all.

Here’s a closer look at how the club actually handled the summer window.

Same Faces in Goal

Despite being unaveilable several times last season with injury problems, Lukáš Hrádecký was kept on by Filipe Luís and sporting director Thiago Scuro, who gave him their full backing. In the early games of the season, he’s always started as first choice. Philipp Köhn, meanwhile, has stayed on as backup. In late August, Lienard was sent out on loan to Cercle Bruges, a partner club, to pick up some playing time.

There was little change in this department, with the club choosing to spend its budget elsewhere.

Dier Reborn

The transfer window opened with the signing of young defender Sadibou Sané, who has lined up at the heart of the defence alongside a revitalised Eric Dier from the very first friendlies. The Englishman was also expected to leave over the summer, both to help cut the wage bill and because of the fitness issues that hampered his time in Monaco. Of the centre-backs, only Thilo Kehrer left the club, heading to Amsterdam on a straight loan.

After six seasons running up and down the left wing, Caio Henrique also moved on, joining Ajax. It was the biggest departure in defence, though he was quickly replaced by Flávio Nazinho, who marked his arrival with a goal against PSG.

Krépin Diatta and Kassoum Ouattara also left the club for good, with their sales bringing in a healthy profit. Jordan Teze, initially seen as surplus to requirements, now looks like a solid option to back up the starters.

If Dier can rediscover his best form, he could become one of the pillars of Filipe Luís’ Monaco. At the same time, the window closed without a replacement on the left flank, leaving the backup role behind Nazinho more or less uncovered, and with only three specialist centre-backs available, while Salisu’s return from injury is still unclear. Mawissa could be used at left-back in an emergency, even outside his natural position.

Camara, the Late Window Twist

One of the biggest talking points of the 2026 summer window was undoubtedly Lamine Camara, expected to leave to help ease the club’s finances. Plenty of clubs showed interest in the Senegalese midfielder.

His fate was decided on the very last day of the window: a move to Chelsea looked done, but a chain of unfortunate circumstances led Monaco to stop the sale. The player said he was ready to come back and give his all for Monaco once again.

His intended replacement, Erik Lira, could only have signed once Balogun had been sold, since that would have freed up a non-EU player slot. With the American striker’s move falling through over fitness concerns raised by Everton’s medical team, the deal for Lira also collapsed.

With no time left to put together another deal, sporting director Scuro chose to stand firm and keep hold of Camara, at least until January.

Paul Pogba’s departure had been in the air for months. The split with the former Juventus midfielder was inevitable. His precarious physical condition took a heavy toll on him, leading to yet another injury-plagued season.

While the departure of Aladji Bamba cost Monaco a player of real quality, Filipe Luís can certainly be pleased to still have one of last season’s best Ligue 1 midfielders in his squad.

It was a summer full of deals that fell through: Pape Cabral also was set to leave the club. An offer worth 12 million euros came in from Al-Ahli, but it was withdrawn within twenty-four hours after the Saudi club sacked their own sporting director, Ruiz Pedro.

Too Many Strikers, Not Enough Shirts

Folarin Balogun’s exit was widely expected, which is why AS Monaco moved early to sign Matthis Abline from Nantes for 25 million euros, with the aim of making him the new no.9.

With Paris Brunner in excellent form, Balogun back in the fold, Abline still to be fully integrated, and Mika Biereth, Monaco’s attack now looks seriously overcrowded. It will be down to the Brazilian coach to manage the balance and playing time, and to work out the best options for his 4-2-3-1, which only has room for one central striker. Abline could potentially be shifted out wide, though those spots are currently taken by Detourbet, Idumbo and Golovin, despite constant talk of a possible return to Russia. And that’s without mentioning Takayuki Minamino and Ansu Fati, both back from injury. It was a bitter pill for Monaco to swallow when academy player Maghnes Akliouche left for Paris Saint-Germain.

Lessons From an Unusual Summer

The DNCG certainly forced AS Monaco to change how they operate, but without losing their identity altogether.

The planned sales of Diatta, Ouattara, Caio Henrique and Bamba went some way toward delivering the profit the club needed. On the other hand, the two most talked-about and complicated deals of the summer didn’t go through, not through choice, but because of a chain of external circumstances that ended up working in Filipe Luís’ favour.

The Brazilian now finds himself with plenty of attacking options, perhaps too many, but also with a few problems to solve: there’s no backup at left-back, and the defence is stretched thin while waiting for Salisu to return.

IT

Nelle prime uscite stagionali, è sempre sceso in campo come prima scelta.
